My philosopy.

For well over a decade, I have been honing my skills as a singer, actor, and teacher in the field of vocal performance. As a performer, I have been fortunate enough to work with some of the industry’s most prominent directors, conductors, and composers, as well as to perform in a variety of venues across North America and Europe. My training in classical music as well as my interest in a broad range of vocal styles has given me a thorough and varied understanding of the art of singing.

My approach to teaching emphasizes the fundamentals of proper breath technique, good posture, resonance, and agility under the umbrella of emotional and physical connection. Using this approach, students young and old are able to bridge the gap between practice and performance, creating both a fully embodied mental, physical, emotional, and artful act. In my studio, I refer to the synergistic use of breath support, optimal resonance, posture, and articulation as the “vocal form.” I encourage students to develop a habituated understanding of this form and then start to find a sense of freedom, play, and intuition within it. It is my hope that through our work together, my students will learn to express themselves fully and confidently both inside and outside of the voice studio.

As an educator in the arts, I am committed to creating an equitable and inclusive learning environment that celebrates diversity and honors the unique experiences and perspectives of each individual student. I believe that it is my responsibility to empower my students to use their art as a vehicle for personal and —should they choose it— social change. I hope to provide a safe space in which students may experiment with and begin to own their own inclinations toward fully embodied self expression. This kind of experimentation combined with encouragement toward developing deep artistic motivations will help students to hone skills that have a real chance at effecting change in our world.

I believe that there is a path to better singing that can be achieved when joyful intuitive exploration is prioritized over the rigid pursuit of technical perfection.
